This month I'm hosting the Green Moms Carnival and am excited about all of the great entries on global warming. This one is mine!
Talk of global warming once conjured up images of Al Gore and created hysterical outcry followed by news reports of naysayers poo-pooing the idea.
No longer, at least in my neck of the woods global warming is taken as fact and brought up in everyday conversation. So rather than discuss what we can do and what we should do, I thought I'd write today about how it has becomes part of our lives.
As we gazed out the window during our holiday trip to a part of Europe that sees snow but not much of it, we were buy the wave of white that blanketed the streets, cars,, grass and us every time we ventured out of doors.
"What happened to global warming" quipped my husband.
Meanwhile, back home, an earthquake shook our city causing much terror but little damage.
"Maybe it has something to do with global warming", a friend ventured.
And on New Year's Eve as we stood outside lighting fireworks with the thousands of others across the country, my 6-year-old son inquired:
"Isn't this bad for the ozone layer, Mom? Doesn't this make global warming worse?".
Obviously global warming as become part of our vocabulary. We bring it up in discussion, use it in jokes and try to connect the dots. Importantly, we're at a point where we are aware of it. And that can only be good.
When Global Warming goes mainstream, we know we're on the brink of actually doing.

You make a good point. Now, when I talk to my in-laws about it, global warming isn't a dirty word. It's a fact of life that we all have to deal with. But it's funny...when they hear someone on the radio talking about it, they're more likely to listen than when they hear me talk about it.
Hi MC, Thanks so much for hosting the Green Moms Carnival this month! My experience has primarily been like yours - but I will say that those "climate skeptics" are out there en masse. A few of them left nasty comments on Jenn Savedge's post for the Green Moms Carnival, and I remember them always lurking around La Marguerite's blog when it was climate focused. We are lucky to be surrounded by more enlightened people, aren't we?

My family lives in a rural county, which shares a border with one of the greener cities in the country. The phrase "global warming" is used with scorn here.
However, when we talk with others about the weather, more and more people are commenting on how weird it has been.
It is early January and we've already had several days that were 80+. Trees and shrubs are flowering and people are wearing shorts and sandals. A house painter I talked to recently summed it up well, "This just doesn't feel right. Something is not normal."
It has been amazing to see how this slightly different path into the same topic leads to an entirely different conversation.
Thanks for hosting the carnival this month!
Thank you for hosting the Green Moms Carnival this month, my first one! My home is San Francisco, a city rarely described as sunny, but this week our forecast is for clear skies and temperatures in the 70's. Indeed, the first explanation to come to mind is global warming.
Whether the dry skies and unseasonable temperatures can be directly attributed to this condition or not, they serve as a reminder to further promote awareness of the issue, as well as our responsibility to address it.
We will always find the naysayers in the audience, but their presence is dwindling. And our collective voice is certainly loud enough to shout above any doubts they may cast.
It is hard to change attitudes, but it is even harder to change beliefs. When we reach the point that people actually believe their lives and the life of the planet are threatened, we'll see real changes start to occur. In the meantime, let's all keep working on attitude shifts that move us in the right direction.
You're right. It's amazing how much awareness has really shot through the roof in the past couple years. Let's hope it keeps up.
when green became main stream it made those of us who had been fostering these ideals think to ourselves - gosh what took you so long?? i feel as we strive on global warming will find it's way - just as it has in your family dynamic...keep exampling
thank you for hostessing this month's carnival!!
Isn't it funny how something even when denied at the begining turns into a given truth after time. All we have to do is keep bringing it up whenever fitting. Little by Little we can change the world!
Better Panic
We never will reach a critical mass of people acting responsibly, it will take having lots of product and organic food and education before it goes mainstream. With Obama in office, I have great expectations!
Thanks for hosting this topic Maryanne.
So true! The year it came out we gave "An Inconvenient Truth" DVD for many holiday gifts and received a lot of (good-natured) eye-rolling in return. Many of these same folks have now watched it, and are starting to understand that not only is there a problem, but that they might be able to help with the solution. Thanks for your post!
