Boys and War Play

Since I wrote, What European Toys Say About European (And Increasingly Many American) Views, I've been thinking about boys and weapons.

This from a preschool teacher...

If I had a dime for each time I heard a group of boys say: “shoot, kill, gun, sword, attack, bad guy or good guy,” I could retiree from teaching. And if I interfered or corrected this language each time it occurred, I’d retiree as an old grump. Instead I learn ways to relate, to find deeper psychological and emotional understanding, and embrace it for what it really is: kids at play.

interesting last two posts makes me think I know raising three boys was a constant barrage of toy swords and guns and yes if I discouraged it they wanted it more if i didn't may much attention they would tire of it sooner

Sometimes cowboys and indians is just cowboys and indians.

We tried not to allow gun play with our kids, but even the girls did it. My husand's brother committed suicide at age 12 with a gun, so we were sensitive to making sure guns are NOT toys. But we gave up. We just teach them well and watch their emotional state.

Great point. I have two boys, two girls.

My boys started making carrots into guns, sticks into swords, etc when they were practically babies.

I blogged about this one time and a troll who had been stalking me gave me heck about it. It was pretty silly. :)

The girls never did have that interest, but the boys still love to light sabre fight. It's just a boy thing... I think it's their natural tendency to want to fight against evil and protect the womanfolk.
