Paranoid About Plastics – Honestly, What’s a Mother to Do?

Today I:

1) Cleaned out all of the plastic children’s plates, bowls and cups from my cabinet and stashed them away to throw out

2) Went to Ikea (under the probably mistaken impression that being a European retailer, everything sold there is held to higher safety standards) and bought now ones.

3) Gave my neighbor the hairy eyeball when I saw Magnetix lying on the floor in her house.

4) Nervously wondered if my lack of vigilance over my DS, when he was a forever mouthing toddler, led to our current homework battles.

I feel like a dork

I dare not tell my DH because he will assure me that I am a dork.

Anyone else feeling confused?

Gosh almighty, I'm just north of dorkdom myself! I keep sneaking suspicious-looking toys to the garbage. You're definitely not the only one!

You are not a dork! And you not alone. I am totally paraniod about the older toys in our house. I bought glass storage containers from Ikea the other day and I love them. They even have a glass lid that seals. Speaking of a dork, I now take a glass container with me when we eat out for leftovers. LOL I freak out over styrofoam containers now.

I've been considering getting glass food storage containers too. Especially since I make my own chicken broth and every time I pour the hot broth into plastic containers I imagine all the chemicals leaching out!

Instead of plastic kids' tableware, we went with (relatively) inexpensive stuff from Ikea, including the all-time best item: the kid-sized forks and spoons sold as dessert tableware! I think they're called Dragon.

My husband thinks I am a dork...but then again I think he is a dork too!

Anyhow, I have been reporting all the recalls on my blog too, which is becoming a full time job!

Honestly, part of me thinks: Hey, I grew up in the '70's and I survived, so what's a little lead?

But the difference now is that we KNOW of these dangers, yet manufacturers still use this dangerous stuff.

The Aqua Dots were kind of the last straw for me.

I'm not entirely sure if Ikea is above par, but I do love their style.

Yes! We wash everything all the time in the hopes that we will keep all evils at bay. "Keep your hands off your face" are the words I use as synonymous with "I love you"!

Here's a meme I hope you'll find worthwhile:

In the long run, the biggest health risks to most children are more pedestrian things like obesity, inactivity, tobacco, excessive alcohol, etc. As parents, we can't worry about everything so I'm personally focusing my energy on teaching them to make good lifestyle choices. I'm more concerned about what goes on the plate and in the storage container than what those things are made of, KWIM?

When you think about it, our kids are SO much safer than we were growing up. I can remember riding around with friends in the bed of a pickup truck when I was my DD's age- yikes! By contrast, she's buckled into a booster seat in a vehicle with anti-lock brakes & multiple air bags.

I will be purging my home of all plastics that touch food such as plastic sippy cups. I will not microwave plastic wrap (not that I did) or use plastic in the microwave and yes, gulp, I think I am ready to forgo my beloved Ziplocs. Sniff. I do see Crimson Wife's point though and I also feel for the people who work in Chinese factories who are exposed to carcinogens every day and don't have any choice in the matter.

The "hairy eyeball" is one that I haven't heard before!

Do you watch "Tell Me That You Love Me" on HBO? There was a scene in which one of the characters threw out all of the plastic dishes. The husband thought she had lost it.

what a wonderful blog title! (we call ourselves "crunchy granola inside, w/soft suburban cover" lol) dh is the big dork in our family. he recently nixed buying cases of bottled water. but now we have the washable platic bottles (in insulated case at least). I wonder if that's any better - chemically. ??
